I know it's been mentioned before, but I wish we could get a Trader Joe's at the old Nugget location. I always think about this when I have to make the drive all the way out to Folsom Blvd from the Greenhaven/Pocket area. I remember someone mentioning that a new one would be built close to La Bou which would help, but I still think the Florin & Riverside location would be a better fit.

I think the 24 Hour Fitness move to the old Nugget shopping center would be wonderful move not only for patron parking, but it is a good fit to expand the facility

But imagine if you will the corner of Greenhaven & Pocket without the 24 Hour Fitness. Big empty space. The loss of the fitness center would mean the loss of a landmark tenant. It is their presence that keeps all of the rest of that corner alive.

We are all full of big ideas, honest intentions, and hope, But MONEY makes the world go around. In a small community, "shuffling money" keeps things going and sustainable.

Lets go back that vacant Pocket/Greenhaven space. Consider it's size, the small but fair amount of parking, and consider this.... Despite the seemingly arrogant reply from the strip mall manager who did not wanting a Thai restaurant in the shopping center to compete with the already established Japanese restaurant. It is all about selecting a tenant that would assist in the growth of the center. Arrogant or not, Hooters or Chili's would not be a good fit in Greenhaven.

What works in Greenhaven? What type of tenant could sustain the shopping center & bring in the right clientel in to lunch and spend a little dough? You ready?

Tuesday Morning!!! Would be a good fit for that corner. Vacating their current location would not close down the Promenade Center. Quite frankly they are overshadowed in that spot.

If Tuesday Mornings were to move to the Pocket/Greenhaven corner it would bring in more daytime customers with time to shop and perhaps lunch at one of the many tasty places already residing in the center. It would lessen current hellish parking situation the Fitness Center causes.

What do you think? It has the makings of a win-win upgrade that would benefit all parties and neighbors alike.

These are the type of changes that could begin to rescue us from recession. If we brought in a Target or Spaghetti Factory we would loose the community of Greenhaven.

Treasure what we have, think small, and shuffle our resources. Leave the big business to the neighborhoods that can support them. Keep Greenhaven a small supportive community. Look at what we have and pour or hopes, dreams, and money into it.

It is said that "Good things come in small packages".

I grew up in Pocket (as my parents did) and can agree with many of the comments above. There have been petitions from chain restaurants and shops but they have been turned down. Many residence like the small town feel and it will get cheapened if these chains open up. That being said many of the owners of the strip malls have WAY unrealistic ideals and expect too much $$$. Right now though with the economy, there is some wiggle room it seems. Owners/Landlords are offering some deals. I grew up with one of the owners of Pocket Bistro. This is a true American story of poeple working their tales off and in turn, giving back to the community in every way that they can. They live in the community and their young children attend the local school. I've been to many of their BBQs when I'm in town and the meat is always done perfectly. His food is wonderful and I'm only sad I'm here in Germany and can't try the restaurant myself. This guy knows what he's doing. Please support them!

I glad you guys are taking the time to comment and are concerned about your community and, more importantly, the representation of it in the media. I thought I should weigh in and let you guys know that I have an editorial policy not to edit or remove comments made by the community, even if they become dated by new information. (I even approve critiques of this site.) :-)
That said, I think it's interesting to keep this thread around because it shows the progression of thought, concerns and actual action over time in the Greenhaven and Pocket neighborhoods. Anyway, thank you for giving me the opportunity to explain myself.
