School Board Hears SES Name Options Thursday
According to the Sacramento City Unified School District project manager for the new School of Engineering and Sciences campus, and several parents (thank you), the Board of Education will take up the matter of a name for the new campus Thursday.
Indeed the naming is Item 10.3 on the agenda for the meeting Thursday (click here). Two students from SES, Jordan Wilson and Mary Chew, will speak on behalf of the parents and the student body.
An excerpt from an email from the parents group highlights 5 points the students will address: 1) Vote of students overwhelming for leaving name as SES, 2) Councilman Robbie Waters and Supervisor Jimmie Yee, both representing Pocket/Greenhaven, agree that the name should be left as it is since that is what the students voted for, 3) The site already has two names, Sojourner Truth Park and Robbie Waters Pocket/Greenhaven Library, adding a third name would be confusing, 4) We’ve made a name for ourselves globally by our participation in and two teams placing third in the Construction Challenge held in Tennessee. We are known as the School of Engineering & Sciences, 5) Years from now there may be an opportunity to name our school after someone who has contributed to our school rather than rushing in and naming it for the sake of naming it.
Last month Pocket Online reported that Supervisor Yee removed his name from consideration after some parents raised concerns about his nomination. (Click here.) If you wish to attend the board meeting in person, the public session begins at 6:30 in the Tennessee Community Room of the Serna Center, 5735 47th Avenue. (Click here for a map.)
The agenda item indicates the Board will not only discuss the name but make a final decision Thursday evening. Pocket Online will report it here as soon as it happens if, in fact, the members do vote on the matter.
